English grammar summary pdf

English grammar is the set of implicit rules that structure the use of the English language. This includes words, syntagms, clauses and sentences, down to forming the structure of complete texts, spoken or written.

Modern English[2] has abandoned the case system of Indo-European in favor of analytic constructions. Personal pronouns retain morphological case more strongly than any other word class (a remnant of the more extensive Old English Germanic case system). For other pronouns, and all nouns, adjectives, and articles, grammatical function is indicated only by word order, by prepositions, and by the Saxon genitive, also called the «possessive case.»[3][4

Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs form open classes: classes of words that readily accept new members. The others are considered closed classes. For example, it is rare that a new pronoun can be created.[4] Interjections are not described here, as they are not involved in the basic structure of the language.
