He is a research taxonomist at the «Biological Institute» of the «Aarhus University» in Copenhagen.[3] He has studied, among others, the genus Boehmeria of the family Urticaceae, in taxonomy of those vascular plants, with emphasis on Africa and especially the Horn of Africa, phytogeography and plant biodiversity in Africa (including the fern floristics of Ethiopia) and the ecology of African vegetation, especially of forests and savannas. Other topics of botanical nomenclature and botanical history, especially those of the botanical explorations of Africa. He has done field work in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Somalia and Thailand.
In 1970, he graduated from the University of Copenhagen with a degree in biology. In 1985 he obtained his PhD from the University of Uppsala with a thesis on Tropical Africa of Urticaceae and Moraceae. In 1992 he graduated in Copenhagen with the thesis The Flora of Forest Trees or Northeast Tropical Africa (Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia).
From 1970 to 1974 he was assistant professor at the Department of Botany, University of Copenhagen. From 1974 to 1987 he held the position of associate professor. From 1987 to 1993 he was curator of the Botanical Museum. Since 1993 he has been a professor there. He is also director of the herbarium of vascular plants.
