In the face of social unrest in which student sectors actively participated, the dictatorial government of José María Velasco Ibarra closed the state universities in June 1970, a situation that lasted until the beginning of 1971.

In the 1980s, the Schools of Higher Accounting (1981), Physical Education (1987) and Visual Arts (1988) were formed. At the same time, the institutionalization of scientific research was promoted with the Institute of Social Research (1976). In 1980 and 1983, the Research Institutes of Technical Sciences (1980) and Health Sciences (1983) were created. In 1996, these organizations were integrated into the Institute of Scientific Research, now the Directorate of Research of the University of Cuenca (DIUC).

At the beginning of the 21st century, an overall perspective allows us to affirm that the University of Cuenca has long transcended the regional sphere. Ecuadorian students and students of different nationalities are educated in its Faculties of Legal Sciences, Medical Sciences, Architecture and Urban Planning, Engineering, Chemical Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Dentistry, Economics, Philosophy and Educational Sciences, Arts, Hospitality Sciences and Psychology. In addition to the Institutes of Languages and Physical Education.
