Each college or university in the United States determines its own admission standards and decides which applicants meet those standards. You must apply separately to each college or university.

If you wish to apply to a graduate program, check the admission requirements at the specific graduate school of the university. Admission requirements for many graduate programs are more stringent and some require you to apply directly to their department. Your academic achievements must be good if you expect to be admitted. Contact the graduate school admissions office or the department chair.

Colleges and universities in the U.S. usually base their admissions decisions on a student’s academic record and the results of relevant tests, such as the TOEFL or SAT. If you are applying to graduate school, other test scores, such as the GRE or GMAT, will be required.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) are colleges and universities that have at least 10 percent of undergraduate students who identify as Asian or Pacific Islander. While there are fewer AANAPISIs (38 currently) than HSIs, universities can be included in both categories.

Universities with these designations are more likely to have offices that support diversity, clubs aimed at helping DACA recipients, and other forms of assistance that help undocumented students. The University of California at Irvine, for example, is classified as AANAPISI and HSI, and has a special office known as the UCI Dream Center, which is dedicated to specifically assisting undocumented students. The Dream Center offers scholarships, academic aid, support groups, special art groups and other forms of assistance to ensure that undocumented students reach graduation. While not all MSIs will have such extensive support, many will offer at least some comparable services.

Each family is evaluated on the basis of financial aid need after completing the FAFSA. Academic scholarships are available for U.S. students enrolling full-time and for international students with 3.0 or higher on a cumulative normal grade point average (minimum SAT/ACT scores may apply).
