Nicholas Ulrich Mayall (May 9, 1906 – January 5, 1993) was an American observational astronomer. After earning his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, he worked at Lick Observatory, where he remained from 1934 to 1960, except for a brief stint at the MIT Radiation Laboratory during World War II.
After graduating in 1928,[8] he chose to remain at Berkeley, as it had the best graduate program at the time in astronomy. However, he temporarily postponed his advanced degree and began working as a human computer at the Mount Wilson Observatory from 1929 to 1931, where he assisted such prominent astronomers as Edwin Hubble, Paul W. Merrill, and Milton Humason.[9][10] This activity resulted in his co-authoring papers on the mass and orbit of Pluto[11][12] with Seth Barnes Nicholson shortly after the discovery of the dwarf planet.[2][13][14][15][16][16]
Using his newly constructed spectrograph, he was the first to determine the radial velocities of many gas knots in the Crab Nebula.[14] Using these data and the previously published angular expansion rate of the nebula, he was able to estimate its distance. Consequently, he became the first person to recognize and demonstrate that the Crab Nebula was the remnant of a supernova observed and recorded in 1054 (SN 1054), rather than a classical nova.[1][20] Walter Baade became instrumental in stimulating and advising Mayall after 1939, taking over the role previously occupied by Hubble.[19] He also became the first person to recognize and demonstrate that the Crab Nebula was the remnant of a supernova observed and recorded in 1054 (SN 1054) rather than a classical nova.

In memory of the former IAU president and NAOJ director general, 251 telescopes were distributed in 22 countries during 26 teacher trainings. These trainings have brought telescopes to many students, allowing them to experience the wonders of astronomy with their teachers. We would like to thank NAOJ for donating these telescopes along with IAU100 and for tangibly enabling more people to access the wonders of space.
