This study analyzes the preferences of North American birdwatchers with respect to the Colombian tourism offer that integrates the participation of local communities (some victims of the armed conflict) and visits to areas of importance (for their biodiversity) for birdwatching, which would exhibit, if the Peace Agreement were signed, better conditions of accessibility and security for visitors. Through the application of the contingent valuation method, the economic value that peace would bring to the ecotourism sector oriented to birdwatching is estimated, through the value that Audubon members assign to these particular characteristics within a tour in the Northern Caribbean of Colombia. From these calculations, an approximation of the demand for the birding tourism sector in that country is made.
The results show that birders would be willing to pay, on average, an additional $US 60 per day and per person for a tour in Colombia, in a post-conflict scenario, which is characterized by more bird watching, greater security and the participation of local communities, previously affected by the armed conflict, in the provision of tourism services, compared to a tour of similar characteristics, in terms of duration and services, offered by Costa Rica, one of the main tourist destinations for birders.
