Iain Sinclair (born June 11, 1943) is a Welsh writer and filmmaker. Most of his work is rooted in London, most recently within the influences of Psychogeography.
His first books Lud Heat (1975) and Suicide Bridge (1979) were a mixture of essay, fiction and poetry; followed by White Chappell, Scarlet Tracings (1987), a novel juxtaposing the tale of a band of book readers in search of a priceless copy of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Study in Scarlet, and the Jack the Ripper murders (here attributed to physicist William Seagull).
Much of Sinclair’s recent work consists of an ambitious and elaborate literary recovery of the so-called occult psychogeography of London. Other psychogeographers who have worked on similar material include Self, Stewart Casa, Michael Moorcock and the London Psychogeographical Association.
One of the series of works centered around London is the London Orbital, the hardcover edition of which was published in 2002, along with a documentary film of the same name and subject. This work describes a series of journeys he made on foot along the M25, London’s ring road, on foot. Sinclair followed this with Edge of the Orison in 2005, a psychogeographical reconstruction of poet John Clare’s walk from Dr. Matthew Allen’s private asylum at Fairmead House, Upper Beach, in the middle of Epping Forest in Essex, to his home in Helpston, near Peterborough. Sinclair also writes about Claybury Asylum, another psychiatric hospital in Essex, in Rodinsky in collaboration with artist Rachel Lichtenstein.

He enrolled at Aberystwyth University and later at Saint John’s College, Oxford, from where he graduated as a barrister. While studying at Saint John’s College, he joined the society of Dafydd ap Gwilym. He also worked in an orchard. He was just a teenager when the Welsh nationalist Plaid Cymru party was founded in 1925, and founded a branch of the party while studying at Oxford. He assumed the presidency of that party in 1945 and remained in office until 1981.
Evans defined himself as a pacifist. Akin to this philosophy, he was active in the Heddychwyr Cymru, a Welsh organization closely linked to the British Peace Pledge Union, serving as secretary and editor of a series of pamphlets during the Second World War. Despite his strong Christian beliefs, Evans advocated conscientious objection. He had to testify before a court which, after recognizing the firmness of his beliefs, recorded him unconditionally.
