Ante los sucesivos cierres de escuelas rurales, este trabajo da cuenta de un estudio cuyo objetivo es conocer la real magnitud de este fenómeno. El trabajo presenta un panorama estadístico de las escuelas primarias cerradas en Chile entre 2000 y 2016. Se analizó un número de escuelas rurales cerradas y en funcionamiento a nivel nacional y regional, según la dependencia administrativa, el índice de vulnerabilidad escolar y la matrícula. Los resultados muestran que estos cierres no son hechos aislados, sino una tendencia que alcanza dimensiones preocupantes. El promedio del índice de Vulnerabilidad Escolar también demuestra cómo estos cierres afectan principalmente a las poblaciones más pobres. A través de estos hallazgos, interrogamos la política educativa, sus vínculos con el debilitamiento de la educación rural y sus consecuencias para las comunidades rurales.
