From the North Pole to the South Pole and from the surface to 4,000 meters deep, new research by microbiologists at Ohio State University has yielded the extraordinary figure of identifying 200,000 distinct viruses in the oceans, which is equivalent to saying that there are ten times more viruses than previously estimated.

A detailed account of these viruses is important because of their broad influence on other marine microbes, including bacteria, archaea, protozoa, and fungi. Which, in turn, may influence climate change. When viruses infect microbes, it can change the structure of microbial communities, increase their metabolism and impact their evolution In the oceans, that is related to the ability of the oceans to improve the environment by absorbing human-produced carbon dioxide.

Marine microbes have a profound impact on our earth. They produce more than half of the oxygen we breathe, move carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to the seafloor, and make up approximately 60 percent of the ocean’s biomass, acting as the foundation of the food web in the oceans. Without microbes, the Earth, its oceans and even our human bodies grind to a halt. Our lab is helping scientists finally ‘see’ the hidden viruses that infect these microbes.

UC professors, city professionals, and indigenous leaders are invited to give lectures and talks on various topics. Foreign students visit scientific stations, lodges, community tourism and agroecology projects inside and outside the city of Cuenca.

2013: Two professors from Kennesaw State University (Dr. Robert DeVillar and Dr. Binbin Jiang) give a free classroom course on research methodology to teachers from the Language Department.

2015: Two professors from Kennesaw State University (Dr. Frank Butler and Dr. Lawrence Peterson) visit the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cuenca and advise on the requirements for obtaining international accreditation with SACS.

2018: 11 UC School of Engineering students participate in an initiative called «Global Classrooms». The 11 students take an online course taught by a University of Maryland faculty member in collaboration with a UC faculty member and make a one-week technical visit to UMD. The students’ stay and part of their travel expenses are funded by UMD. Global Classrooms will be offered for a second time in 2021 and a third time in 2022.

Family obligations present another challenge for Hispanic students. A 2014 survey by National Journal found that two-thirds of Hispanic women and men who sought full-time work or joined the military after completing high school expressed doing so to help their loved ones financially. In comparison, only 39% of white women and men who did not attend college said the same.

However, many schools classify undocumented students as «aliens,» which removes their ability to be eligible for federal financial aid and reduced in-state tuition rates.

Read our Guide for Undocumented Students in Higher Education to learn more about the various resources available to help this population pursue higher education.

Students in the U.S. must be classified as permanent residents before they can receive financial aid. Most immigrants obtain permanent residency by applying for a Green Card, but current laws stipulate that undocumented citizens cannot do that; instead, they must leave the U.S. and apply for permanent residency from the consulate of their home country.
