Tradicionalmente, los pragmáticos se han mostrado favorables a mejorar nuestra comprensión de la agencia y la ética mediante el uso de la investigación empírica. En las dos últimas décadas, la teoría de la simulación ha sido defendida en ciertos círculos de la ciencia cognitiva como una forma de explicar cómo atribuimos estados mentales y predecimos el comportamiento humano. Basándose en la investigación en psicología y neurociencia, Alvin I. Goldman y Robert M. Gordon no sólo han utilizado la teoría de la simulación para discutir cómo «leemos la mente», sino que han sugerido que la teoría tiene implicaciones para la ética. Las limitaciones de la teoría de la simulación para la «lectura mental» y la ética se abordan en este artículo desde una perspectiva pragmática interaccionista o neomeadiana. Para demostrar las limitaciones de la teoría de la simulación se utilizan escenas de la serie de televisión Mad Men como «experimentos de pensamiento».

The University was established by Royal Charter granted by King James VI in 1582, becoming the fourth Scottish university, at a time when England, much more populous and prosperous, had only two.
In 2002 the university was reorganized and its nine faculties were grouped into three colleges, and since then it has been organized into the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), the College of Science and Engineering (SCE) and the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (MVM).
Students at the University are represented by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), founded in 1884 by Robert Fitzroy Bell, and the Edinburgh University Students’ Association (EUSA), comprising the Edinburgh University Union (EUU), founded in 1889.
