Ranking of the world’s best universities 2022
The Nature Index methodology is based on scientific production and does not consider other usual parameters, such as reputation studies, patents or employability of graduates. Articles published in journals in four fields of knowledge are taken into account and the relative participation of each institution in the papers is weighted. With the selection of high-impact scientific journals in the natural and life sciences, the results function as a thermometer of the capacity of universities to generate knowledge with the potential to produce applications with economic impact.
Academic rankings have existed since the end of the 19th century, when the U.S. government issued reports with university indicators. They became popular in the 1980s, when magazines such as U.S. News & World Report in the United States and Playboy in Brazil began to publish university rankings. It was not until the beginning of the 21st century that these rankings began to influence university strategies. In 2003, Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China created a ranking of academic excellence, the Arwu, which is based on objective criteria such as publications and the record of alumni and professors who have won a Nobel Prize. The aim was to help Chinese students choose universities abroad.
