«We’re seeing two sets of things happen: a lot of vaccinated people get infected. We’re doing well. Avoiding especially getting seriously ill, avoiding the hospital. «So we have to start thinking about a long-term strategy on how to manage this virus and not go from surge to surge feeling like we don’t have a longer-term approach,» Jha said.

Of the approximately 5,000 hospitals that reported this data to HHS on Saturday, nearly 1,200–that’s about 1 in 4–said they are currently experiencing critical staffing shortages, the largest of the entire pandemic. On top of that, more than 100 different hospitals said they anticipate shortages within the next week.

«I expect this surge to peak in the next two weeks. It will peak in different parts of the United States at different times. But once we get into February, I really expect much lower numbers,» Jha told ABC.
