On April 8, 1776, the Georgia Provincial Congress issued a constitutional document that served as an interim constitution until the adoption of the Constitution of 1777. The British occupied most of Georgia from 1780 until shortly before the official end of the American Revolution in 1783.
At the time of European colonization of America, the Cherokee, Yamasi, and Hitchiti peoples lived throughout Georgia. Closer to the coasts there were Muskogean tribal groups mostly divided between the Guale and Timucua. The name Appalachia comes from their languages, and, specifically, from a Timucua group from northern Florida called the Apalache.
English settlement began in the early 1730s, when James Oglethorpe, a member of Parliament, proposed that the area be settled by England’s «worthy poor» to provide an alternative to debtors’ prisons. Oglethorpe and other English philanthropists secured a royal charter as the trustees of the colony of Georgia on June 9, 1732. With the motto, «Not for ourselves, but for others,» the trustees chose settlers for Georgia.
