This article reflects on the relationship between libraries and peace. Libraries depend on peace for their existence, development and survival, at the same time that they contribute to preserve and build it. The first part of this paper analyzes the emergence of the internationalist and pacifist movements in the 19th century and their relationship with the modern arrival of librarianship and documentation science. It then discusses the role of libraries in peace-building as conceived by UNESCO and explores the different contemporary conceptions of the concept of peace. Finally, it explores the role of libraries in peace building.
