What is a universal language? Why do some languages become universal? Cohesion, community, culture, colonization and commerce («the five E’s») are the axes around which today’s universal languages are defined.

The biblical passage not only tries to explain the cause of the diversity of languages, but also gives us another key of great relevance: «The whole earth was of one language and of one speech». This is the first meaning of the expression «universal language», equivalent to «original language».

It is clear that «perfect» language is not the same as «universal language», but if there were a perfect language, it can be thought that it would easily become universal. The best known perfect artificial language, conceived from the idea that it could serve for universal communication, is Esperanto, developed by the Pole L. L. Zamenhof in the 19th century. Although it has been widely spread, it has not caught on despite the simplicity of its grammar and the ease with which it can be learned.

There is a sexist use of language in oral and written expression (in informal conversations and official documents) that transmits and reinforces the asymmetrical, hierarchical and inequitable relations that exist between the sexes in every society and that is used in all areas of society. Within these spheres, we would like to highlight the administrative sphere, since it is not a common practice to contemplate and include in its documents an adequate use of language. It is enough to read a couple of documents or listen to telephone messages from administrative bodies to be able to detect that the masculine is still used as a universal and neutral language. The feminization of the language is denied and in doing so, women are being made invisible and the social and cultural changes that are occurring in society are being rejected.

The nine chapters that make up this manual are intended to develop and provide the necessary conceptual foundations, as well as options for change, to achieve the general objective we set out above. The first chapter, «The role of language as a socializing agent of gender», constitutes the conceptual framework of this manual, which is why it is vitally important to understand it.
