Hansa Jivraj Mehta (Surat, July 3, 1897 – Bombay, April 4, 1995) was an Indian politician and feminist activist.[1][2][3] She was a social worker, educator, writer and reformer. She fought for the independence of her country achieved in 1947 and was part of the Constituent Assembly where she advocated for equality and justice for women, collaborating in the drafting of the Constitution of India adopted in 1949. Together with Eleanor Roosevelt, she is considered the driving force behind the initiative to incorporate inclusive language in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, replacing the phrase «All men are born free and equal» in Article 1 with «All human beings are born free and equal».[4] After her release, Mehta Mehta was a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1947 and was part of the Constituent Assembly where she advocated for equality and justice for women.

After his release, Mehta represented the Bombay Legislative Council and won the provincial elections. On December 19, 1946, while discussing the issue of electorate in the Constituent Assembly, Mehta said, «The women’s organization to which I have the honor to belong has never asked for reserved seats, quotas or separate electorates. What we have asked for is social justice, economic justice, and political justice.»[5]

1. The defense and legal assistance are inviolable rights at every stage and degree of the investigation and trial. Everyone has the right to be notified of the charges against him; to have access to evidence; and to have adequate time and facilities for the exercise of his defense. Evidence obtained in violation of due process shall be null and void. Any person found guilty has the right to appeal the verdict, with the exceptions established in this Constitution and the law.

4. Every person has the right to be tried by his natural judges in the ordinary or special jurisdictions, with the guarantees established in this Constitution and the law. No person may be subjected to trial without knowing the identity of the person who is trying him, nor may he be tried by courts of exception or by commissions created for that purpose.

8. Any person may request from the State the reestablishment or reparation of the legal situation injured by judicial error, unjustified delay or omission. The right of the individual to demand the personal liability of the magistrate, judge, or judge, and the right of the State to take action against them, shall remain unaffected.
