Visual perception is one of our primary means of understanding and navigating the world around us, especially when it comes to interactions with other people (e.g., recognizing their emotions, recognizing people we have seen before, reading their body language, inferring their intent, etc.). Understanding visual information is an important part of our learning and our daily lives, but it is so «natural» to us that we do it without consciously realizing it. In fact, we know relatively little about how visual processing works in us and other living things. This project aims to advance the state of the art of how to recognize, automatically by a computer connected to one or more sensors, different human actions especially in situations where the sensors are very close to the observed action. To focus the work, we use the behavior of passengers in buses as a case study. There are also applications in robotics and assisted living for elderly people. We collaborate with UCL (UK), Kingston University (UK) and INRIA (France).
