Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland, United Kingdom, with a population of over 220,000. It is a port city located on the northeast coast of Scotland, about 120 miles (190 km) north of Edinburgh and 400 miles (650 km) north of London, where the rivers Dee and the Don meet the North Sea. It is a major seaport, the regional center, and the center of the North Sea oil industry.

Aberdeen is one of the most prosperous places in Scotland, mainly due to the North Sea oil industry, and has low unemployment (just over 2% in February 2012), leading to a low crime rate compared to other UK cities. Immigration by the oil industry and universities gives the city a cosmopolitan air that often surprises visitors, and when away from home the city’s languages are heard around the world.

As technology improved, granite could be worked more cheaply. Granite began to be exported by sea, especially in London, where many buildings are built of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire granite (for example, the fountains of Trafalgar Square). However, the highly carved granite was still expensive and showed the success and status of the owner, with the side and rear walls left in cheaper, rough stone materials as in Bath. Many of these buildings (especially in the city center) are now in need of restoration and have a faded air of grandeur. Buildings are no longer constructed in granite, but it is still widely used as a cladding material and granite gravels are widely used in the concrete of modern buildings (which makes Aberdeen concrete also gleam in the sunlight).
