Each family is evaluated on the basis of financial aid need after completing the FAFSA. Academic scholarships are available for U.S. students enrolled full-time and for international students with 3.0 or higher on a cumulative normal grade point average (minimum SAT/ACT scores may apply).

Family obligations present another challenge for Hispanic students. A 2014 survey by National Journal found that two-thirds of Hispanic women and men who sought full-time work or joined the military after completing high school said they did so to help their loved ones financially. In comparison, only 39% of white women and men who did not attend college said the same.

However, many schools classify undocumented students as «aliens,» which removes their ability to be eligible for federal financial aid and reduced in-state tuition rates.

Students in the U.S. must be classified as permanent residents before they can receive financial aid. Most immigrants obtain permanent residency by applying for a Green Card, but current laws stipulate that undocumented citizens cannot do that; instead, they must leave the U.S. and apply for permanent residency from the consulate of their home country.

Attending college as an undocumented or DACA student can make you feel isolated, especially if no one else seems to understand your experience. However, you may be able to find other undocumented or DACA students who empathize with you, especially if they face similar challenges. When you connect with these students, you can build a community that helps each other grow and succeed.

You may find yourself dealing with too many emotions when you go to college: anxiety, depression, guilt, the feeling of being overwhelmed. Many college campuses host mental health centers where you can talk to a counselor or psychologist in complete confidence.

Seek out activities or causes you are passionate about. Getting involved in campus activities can give you a sense of purpose and lead to tangible change, particularly if you get involved with advocacy groups for undocumented and immigrant students.
